WEEK TEN

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

This week was one of unforgettable week in my life. Last Thursday was the Proposal Presentation Day for all students of Final Year Project 1 or FYP1. I have been assess by Madam Naszariah and Sir Hisyam.

Before the presentation, me and my other friends struggled until our last breath to completely prepare our presentation. I have been asked for the contribution to nation. For my project, I'm helping the disabilities with hand paralysis or born without hand to move the mouse cursor without the need to touch the mouse or track pad.

Alhamdulillah, me and my other friends were succeed although we have been asked many questions by the assessor.

Barakallah.

WEEK NINE

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Next week will be the Proposal Presentation Day for all FYP1 students. I feel very nervous. I hope I can present the best to the assessors.

A few weeks before, I had contact the Grass Technologies which produce the reusable EOG electrodes. (Click here). The price was quite expensive. Plus, the electrode must buy in packages. So, I need to find another electrode.

Barakallah.

WEEK EIGHT

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

The circuit above is the sample circuit that I can use instead of the circuit that I had posted before. For my project, I will use the same circuit for right-left and upward-downward which means, I will use two same circuit construction, one for right-left and another one is for upward-downward movement of eyes.

Above is the figure of eye movement and the effect of the signal on the LCD display. When the eye is in the upward gaze, the LCD will display "Cursor move UP" and when the eyes is in downward gaze, the LCD will display "Cursor move DOWN". It is the same for the rest which are for right and left gaze. And for clicking, the eyes must blink for longer time to differentiate the involuntary action of eyes blinking. This is because the saccades inherent in the eye motion as well as blinking of the eyelids can produce changes in the EOG signals.

WEEK SEVEN

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

As we know, EOG is all about the action potential or electric potential because of the movement of retina. The action potential results from a rapid flux of ions across the cell membrane in response to an electrical simulation or transient change in the electrical gradient of the cell. The electric excitation of cells generate currents in the surrounding volume conductor manifesting itself as potentials in the body. For this project, the motion of the eyeballs inside the conductive contents of the skulls alters the electric potentials.

EOG sometimes used to study eye positions or disorders of eye movement and balance. EOG also has been used for animation. Robrt Zemeckis and Jerome Chan, who are the visual effect supervisor for the movie entitle "Beowulf"  have been used this technique to enhance the performance capture by correctly animating the eye movement of the actors.

Apart from that, there are many researchers are doing this type of research. There are many examples of EOG projects. Below is one of the research involving EOG. This project involving phone as the device. Eyes are controlling the music player of the phone. The volume and the track of the song is controlled by the eye movement.

Hope you enjoy the video!

Barakallah.

WEEK SIX

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

My FYP needs me to do both software and hardware development. For hardware development, I had find a circuit that need to-be-construct. I had posted the circuit in previous entry (click here). For software development, I use PIC software. This also I had posted in previous entry (click here) and (here)

I also need electrodes which are the main components for my circuit construction. There are five total of EOG electrodes needed for this project. Four are placed around the eyes and one more is the reference electrode which place on the forehead of the subject. Reference electrode has a stable and well-known electrode potential. The high stability of the electrode potential is usually reached by suitable redox reaction. Reference electrode is an electrode that maintains a virtually invariant potential under the conditions prevailing in an electrochemical measurement, and that serves to permit the observation, measurement or control of the potential of the indicator or working electrode.

This is the four channel configuration or also known as electrode placement. I use this configuration because this configuration has four direction compared with the two electrode configuration which use only one plane which are right and left. The four channel configuration use two planes which are upward and downward and also right and left. This can be simulated to mouse cursor direction.

The voltage range for EOG signals are different and depend on individuals. But the voltage is still in millivolts. So, the circuit need to filter the noise and amplify the small signals from the resting potential of the retina.
